DEVONPORT AFFAIRS

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals urged the Devonport Borough Council last evening to replace horse watering-troughs that were recently removed from th© streets on the ground that horse traffic had so decreased that troughs were not needed; two troughs being now left. The request was handed to the inspector for report. The Devonport United Band asked for permission to erect a bandstand at Cheltenham Beach on a section belonging to the borough. The request is to be considered. The gardener reported that 1,000 trees had been received as a donation from an afforestation company, and would be planted in the reserves and along streets. Mr. E. Aldridge and Mr. Enright will represent the council at a meeting of local bodies to examine the Auckland Water Supply Bill and town-planning. Complaints that the builder of a house at Sanders Avenue had not complied with the by-lw were made. The council instructed its inspector to see that the side wall of the house, -which was two feet nearer the section boundary than permitted for a wooden building, was constructed in brick, or alternatively that the present structure be re-built. The engineer is to submit costs for widening Lake Road, Kerr Street footpath formation, and Grey Street, possibly a loan may be passed as an unemployment relief loan. The North Devonport Ratepayers’ Association conveyed to the council its appreciation of the policy of dividing the borough into sectors and placing a surfaceman in charge of each. The system would also be economical as well as efficient. Legislation is to be obtained this session validating the transfer to the borough by the Church of England of the cemetery on Albert Road in exchange for the freehold of two sections owned by the borough at Narrow Neck. The Ngataring Tennis Club declined to agree to a suggestion that it build its proposed pavilion on a site near the entrance to Stanley Park, and was granted permission to erect in nearer the tennis courts. A scheme for widening Patuore Place to street width is to be submitted to the Town Planning Board for approval.
