FRANKLIN AFFAIRS

The Franklin County Council met yesterday, Cr. J. N. Massey presiding. The Main Highways Board advised it had approved of a subsidy of £250 on a £2 for £1 basis, for the clearing of the Mangatawhiri Stream. The work is to be placed in hand. A deputation from the Tuakau Town Board was advised that the council was prepared to proceed with the taking of the Whangarata-Pokeno Road loan poll, but as the question of a comprehensive scheme lor the surfacing of the Great South Road in permanent material was under consideration, action had been deferred pending the receipt of information from the Highways Board. The dangerous state of a corner near the Glenbrook school, on the WaiukuItrury Road, was the subject of complaint by a deputation of residents, who pointed out that it was the scene of a fatal accident in December last. -The engineer was asked to investigate. Tenders are to be called for the repair of the Miranda wharf when the plans are approved by the Marine Department.

Rates are to be struck as follow, last year’s rates being given in parentheses where there is any alteration: Awhitu Riding, 1 l-8d; Drury, 1 5-Sd (13d); Hunua, 13d (lid); Karaka, Id (1 1-Sd) : Mauku, j l-8d; Mercer, 1 3-8 d (lid): Pukekohe East, 1 1-Sd; Pukekohe West, lid (1 1-Sd); Waipipi, lid; Waiuku, lid (Id). The hospital rate is 3-10 d compared with id of last year. A rebate of 5. per cent, is to be allowed for the prompt payment of rates.

Jn connection with the draft copy of the Auckland Institute and War Memorial Museum Bill, the chairman expressed the opinion that steps should taken to circularise members of Parliament representing rural districts to oppose it being carried. The chairman and the secretary were empowered to take any action they might deem fit.
