MOTHERS' UNION WILL ALWAYS FLOURISH

SUCCESSFUL YEAR BIBLE-IN-SCHOOLS BILL So long as the Anglican Church flourishes so will the Mothers’ Union. ' Canon Percival James, who attended yesterday’s annual meeting in Auckland of the Mothers’ Union, voiced this opinion. The Primate,, Archbishop Averill presided over a large attendance at St. Mathew’s Hall. Canon James, referring to the Bible in Schools Bill, said that nearly 12,000 new members had been enrolled during the past year, solely by the efforts of the union, one of its principal aims being the passage of the Bill. There was every reason to hope that it woLild be passed this year, he considered, but if it was again rejected, then he contended that a referendum should be taken and the wishes of the people considered. In the ninth annual report it was stated that several new branches liad been opened. As usual, three wreaths had been given for Anzac Day. One was placed on the Unknown Warrior’s grave in Westminster Abbey, one on the London Cenotaph, and one on the local Cenotaph. A thousand leaflets had been sent out in connection with the Bible-in-Schools Bill, and it was earnestly hoped that the Bill would be passed by Parliament this year. In connection with re-upholding the sanctity of marriage, a memorial to this effect had been drawn up at a meeting of the Dominion Council in Wellington last October. This had been laid before the General Synod, and had the sympathy and support of the Primate and all other bishops. The financial staement showed a very satisfactory credit balance. The Rev. R. G. Coats also addressed the gathering.
