BIOLOGY PROFESSOR CALLED TO THE ZOO
POST-MORTEM EXAMINATION “PRACTICAL BACTERIOLOGY” Professor Sperrin-Johnson had to Lurry through his address on the life of the eminent scientist Pasteur before the Karangahape Road Business Men’s Association yesterday in order to attend a post-mortem examination at the Auckland Zoo. Or, as the professor termed it: “A practical study in bacteriology on the pot! ” Professor Sperrin-Johnson paid tribute to the early discoveries of Pasteur and the part they had since played in the welfare of humanity. The name of Pasteur, he said, had been immortalised in the word pasteurisation. Since then his investigations, part of which had been carried out in conjunction with the French wine trade, had been further developed by discoveries in surgery and in natural science. Pasteurisation alone, said Professor Sperrin-Johnson, had resulted in the saving of thousands of infant lives.
