NEARLY £SOO INVOLVED CANVASSER ADMITS GUILT (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Four charges of theft, and one of false pretences were laid against Walter Patrick Murphy, a canvasser, aged 21, in the Police Court to-day, before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M. The total of the amounts involved in the five charges was £496 19s 3d. Murphy was not represented by counsel, and pleaded guilty to all the charges. Detective-Sergeant J. B. Young said that accused stole the motor-car in Dunedin, and then commenced a series of thefts. He stopped at Washdyke on his way to Christchurch, and bought some petrol, paying for it with a valueless cheque. He was admitted to probation for theft only two months ago.
The magistrate imposed a sentence of one month’s imprisonment with hard labour. Evidence in the remaining cases was called, and accused, who pleaded guilty, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
