WIN FOR LABOUR
SEAT OF THE LATE SPEAKER (United- P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (United Service) LONDON, Saturday. The by-election at Halifax, which was caused by the retirement of the Speaker, Mr. J. H. Whitley, resulted as follows: Mr. Longbottom (Labour) .. 17,356 Major Barnes (Liberal) 12,585 Major Crossley (Conservative). 10,864 Labour majority 4,951 The result of this by-election is a gain for Labour from the Liberals. Mr. Whitley was originally elected as a Liberal and was returned unopposed while he was Speaker.
