MANUFACTURE OF PAPER
EXPERIMENTS IN AMERICA NEW ZEALANDER RETURNS The manufacture of paper and wood pulp was the mission which took Mr. A. R. Entrican, of Wellington, to the United States. He is engineer to the State Forest Service, and returned to New Zealand yesterday by the Aorangi. Mr. Entrican has been attached to the Forest Products Laboratory at Madison, Wisconsin, which is considered the foremost laboratory of its kind in the world, and at which extensive experiments regarding the manufacture of products from wood pulp are carried out. Various woods were selected for study at the laboratory. Mr. Entrican took specimens of woods grown in New Zealand with him and experiments were made with these. Generally speaking, these experiments were most successful, and it was found that the principal classes of paper, such as newspaper and wrapping paper, could be made from the woods grown in New Zealand. There is a large quantity of wood available from the State forests of the Dominion, as the plantations have to be thinned out considerably. It is from these woods that the paper would be manufactured, though Mr. Entrican considers that certain economical problems would have to be considered before any action is taken. H e will submit a report regarding his activities and experiments to the Government shortly.
