DESTITUTE MAORIS
CHARITABLE AID WANTED DEPUTATION TO BOARD Te Akarana Maori Association members resolved last evening to ask the Auckland Hospital Board to receive a deputation regarding the question of charitable aid for destitute Maori persons. It was wrong to differentiate, it was suggested, between Europeans and Maoris in the question of charitable The policy of the board in the past, it was reported, had been to decline assistance to Maoris, owing, principally, to the trouble in obtaining Maori rates, and the consequent difficulty for local bodies in regard to hospital and charitable aid assessments. There was nothing in the acts, it was stated, that -warranted any differentiation between the races. As was the case with Europeans, there has been much distress among certain Maoris during recent months. The Maoris submit that they should receive the same consideration as the Europeans.
