Auckland's Invitation

MAYOR CABLES TO KINGSFORD SMITH Ideal Landing Ground Obtained NOT only lias Auckland found an excellent landing ground for the Southern Cross, but it has obtained permanent accommodation for its aero club. This morning an invitation to visit Auckland was cabled to Squadron-Commander Kingsford Smith by the Mayor. Mr. G. Baildon.

Findlay, and it is considered that a run-wav of sufficient length is available to enable the Southern Cross to take off with a full load on its return flight to Australia. This morning the following invitation was cabled to Squadron-Comman-der Kingsford Smith by the Mayer, Mr. G. Baildon: “I desire to tender you a most cordial invitation to visit Auckland j in connection with your contemplated trip to New Zealand. The ; Auckland Aero Club will provide all S facilities for landing, and the j ground selected is also suitable for a taking-off ground for your departure to Australia. I trust you will favour our citizens with the opportunity to express their appreciation of your -vfronderful achievement.”

Following on the inspection of a site at Mangere, generously offered !, by Mr. Mcßae Peacock, the Mayor has i, been advised that suitable ground is | available. « The ground was inspected yesterday ( by Captain Isitt, of the New Zealand Permanent Air Force, Captain J. Sea- 1 brook, and Major Cowper. It com- , prises about 60 acres, and in the opin- ; ion of Major Cowper would be suitable for any type of airplane be knows of. Captain Isitt expressed himself as de- ■ lighted with the ground, and considered it would meet the requirements j of the Southern Cross. SUITABLE RUN-WAY Mr. Peacock has generously offered j the Aero Club the use of the ground for five to six year 3, and will also allow it to erect any buildings necessary.
