Harness Contests at Ashburton

VESUVIUS WINS BIG EVENT JACKIE AUDUBON MAKES GOOD (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Beautiful weather was experienced for the autumn fixture of the Ashburton Trotting Club today, which, with the promise of keen racing, attracted a large attendance. The track was in fine order and speculation brisk, the sum of £17,738 being put through the machine, compared with £16,887 last year. Loiterer’s Costly Loiter The three-year-old Delightful beat the outsider Loiterer by a head in the Improvers’ Handicap. Delightful began quickly, but Loiterer lost a little ground. When half the journey was covered the issu.e was confined to Rose Marie, Roger* Lyon, Delightful, Wraekler, Loiterer and Moira. Nearing the home bend Roger Lyon dropped back, and at the head of the stretch Loiterer and Delightful drew slightly away from the others, of which the two-year-old Wraekler was doing best. In a see-sawing finish. Delightful finished particularly well for a three-year-old, and won by a narrow margin. The performance of Wraekler was distinctly creditable. The winner is by Happy Voyage, and Wraekler is by Wrack. Two-Year-Old Trotter Impresses While all credit .is due to Author Thorpe for the easy win he recorded in the Allenton Handicap, the gem of the field was a two-year-old trotter by Wrack from Pearlchild, named First Wrack, who finished third. The winner was in front from start to finish. In the early stages Brent Boy, Molly Bingen and Connie Audubon were conspicuous, but three furlongs from home Brent Boy and Molly Bingen were beaten. First Wrack and Repute then came on the scene, and filled third and fourth places. The winner is by Lord Thorpe and was driven by J. H. Wilson. One for Reefton But for making a break 50 yards from home Dalmeny looked like beating Vesuvius in the Durbar Handicap. It was a fine race, with Vesuvius in front all the way, and for a four-year-old to go out and make the pace it was a high-class effort. He is owned by V. Alborn and is by Matchlight from Hetty King, and is trained by his owner at Reefton. Honour Bright, Theckla Boy and Huon Denver failed to leave the mark properly. Chimer was With the winner for a mile, then he gradually drifted into the ruck. Genuine, Great Actress, Fashion Queen, Rey Logan, Epigram and Jolly Pet were with the front division at the stand, but when a mile and a-half was completed Great Actress and Fashion Queen were beaten. At the bend for home Epigram was up with Vesuvius and Dalmeny, and Genuine and Jolly Pet were still orguing the point. Half-way down the straig.it Dalmeny tackled Vesuvius, and but for making a mistake he might have beaten the winner. King Abdallah Returns to Form King Abdallah cleared out at the start, and ridden out in the straight won the Harvest Handicap easily by six lengths. Lady Minto, Lady Brent and Young Author got on the journey smartly, but Lady Minto and Young Author misfired in their gaits after going two furlongs. Going to the far bend, Transport ran through into second ’place, with Springtime and Vikota doing best of the others. Once into the straight Vikota collared Transport and beat everything for second money 'as easily as the winner Jieat her. Favourite Lands After a battling finish among Florrie Pointer, June de Oro and Warrenore, the favourite, June de Oro won the Autumn Handicap by e head from Florrie Pointer, with Warrenore two lengths further away. For 12 furlorx&s Joan Dillon and Lough Neogh were well placed, but; neither could come on. June de Oro was driven by A. Smith. Easy for Len Wood Half a mile from home Reta Corena had an advantage of a dozen lengths of De Crepe and Len Wood in the Utility andicap, but when the distance post was reached Len Wood got on terms with Reta Corena. A sharp tussle took place, during which the latter made a break, leaving Len Wood to trot home an easy winner. New Metford made up a lot of ground over the last half mile, but he could not set within 15 lengths of the winner. Ho lost his chance through a slow beginning. A Snappy Finish The Rakaia Handicap provided a snappy finish, Jackie Audubon lasting long enough to beat Jolly Pet by a. head, with Dalmeny a similar distance away third.. Event and Huon Denver left their feet at the start. Ayr dashed to the front, with Hustler, Lulu Lad and Dillon Gold in that order. Dillon Gold was in charge at the end of three furlongs, but when tackled at the head of the stretch he gave in Jackie Audubon went to the front with Dalmeny after him, and then Jolly Pet got a clear run and was travelling best fit the finish. Another couple of strides and he would have beaten Jackie Audubon, who was piloted by his trainer, J. J. Kennerley. Double Event at Last The Farewell Handicap was won by Double Event, who scored nicely with F. E. Jones in the saddle. Nipper, Rufine and Logan King followed him closely into the straight, but although Rufine made a big effort. Double Event kept her at bay to win by half a length. A length farther away came Logan King, with Nipper close up fourth.
