Four & Sixpence For a Frock

“And Ever so Chic " WHAT SWANSON WOMEN CAN DO When the members of the Swanson branch of the Women’s Institute start dressmaking, they certainly do things thoroughly, and more economically than do most women, whose harassed husbands scowl over bills for pounds and pounds and pounds. Four and sixpence—that was the amount of money the members decided to spend on a frock each, when they recently held a dressmaking competition. The results of their expenditure and labour was amazing, for the daintiest and most serviceable frocks were displayed, each costing only 4s 6d. Three prizes were awarded in the competition, and the first went to Mrs. Strachan, whose entry was a dainty thing of rose-pink shading, inset with panels of cream lace and effectively finished with frilled long sleeves. The frocks were exhibited at the monthly meeting on Wednesday, when a large number of members were present. Miss Perrin and Mrs. Christie, of Auckland, were also present and gave an interesting demonstration of raffia work, showing some beautiful examples of their handiwork.

BRIDGE PARTY Chrysanthemums in golden and bronze shade made gay splashes of colour in the drawing room of Miss R. McGruer’s flat, in St. Stephen’s Avenue, Parnell, on Saturday evening, when she gave a bridge party in honour of Miss Doris Hutchinson, of Wellington, who is spending a holiday in Auckland. Miss McGruer wore a smart gown of black georgette, banded with rhinestones, to receive her guests. Miss Hutchinson chose a frock of delphinium blue taffetas, with motifs of ecru lace. Among those present were: Mrs. Laird, wearing a crystal beaded frock of mist blue ninon. Mrs. A. Anderson, in rose and cream figured chiffon. Mrs. W. Hutchinson, frock of opal blue georgette and lace. Mrs. Northing, black frock of georgette and lace. Mrs. C. McArthur, embossed black satin frock. Mrs. IT. R. Burns, primrose yellow frock of tulle with diamente girdle. Mrs. Rogers, white georgette frock with Strass embroidery. Miss M. Hutchinson, iris mauve georgette frock. Miss Robertson, frock of black georgette with sequin trimming. Miss M. Gibson, peach-tinted taffetas frock. Miss M. Dawson, frock of petunia-ring velvet. Miss Alderton, leaf-green taffetas frock, f Miss N. Farquhar, steel beaded frock of j black chiffon. Miss Rodn. y. white pantu- velvet frock.
