SOFIA TERROR-STRICKEN QUAKES ROCK COUNTRY SCORES OF CASUALTIES (United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian Press Association) Reed. 10.50 a.m. SOFIA, Thursday. NOT only the capital, but the whole of the country is in a state of panic because of the earthquakes.

r rHEEE were indescribable scenes in Sofia when the audiences rushed from the theatres and cinemas, and the whole populace spent the night in the streets. The earthquake, which was worst at Phillipopolis, was accompanied by a fearful storm and torrential rain. The electric light failed, intensifying the lightning. There were 30 shocks throughout the night, and many fires. Dozens of buildings collapsed.

The night’s casualties totalled 15 killed and 150 injured. It is reported that the town of Papazli was wiped out. The earthquake shocks yesterday were felt severely at Bucharest (Rumanui), Belgrade (Yugoslavia), aud Budapest (Hungary). Anxiety is felt on account of the absence of direct news from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, in which country the disturbance was centred.
