Many of the special racing cars have been under preparation for some months past and most of the preliminary work has been done on off days at the top end of the beach out of sight of everyone. If the Stutz wins the cup this year it will be the third time in succession and the driver, R. B. Wilson, will be entitled to take permanent possession of it. The Australian competitors will be arriving from Sydney with their cars to-day. A Sunbeam eight which has performed prominently in European Grand Pnx races will be raced by Mr. G. Henning. Mr. Henning has completely renovated the car and it is said to be running very well. Entries have been received from Australia, Canterbury, Wellington, Hamilton and Taranaki. ALL ARRANGEMENTS MADE ROADS IN GOOD CONDITION Arrangements are being made on every hand to cater for the big crowds expected at the Muriwai motor races on February 4. The road to Muriwai Beach has been « .i_ n s °? d order - Particularly portions of the Lincoln Road, which is much improved over last year’s condition. The whole road is now metalled with the exception of one portion where a cutting is being made. The road out to the beach via Waimauku has been metalled another few miles, and to all intents and purposes is an all-weather route. The final portion of the road is under the Motutara Domain Board, which has been fining in the holes in the road. In addition the slip of a big tree near the beach was partly cleared away last week and will be finished this week and the road widened. RACE ARRANGEMENTS The committee is endeavouring to cater for the interest of the public and has rearranged the programme to that end. At this meeting the laps in both cup races have been shortened from five miles to four miles, so that the competitors will be In view as much as possible. They are also trying to arrange a system of signals to show the order in which the cars passed the top post. Given fine weather, and that seems assured, the race meeting should be a great success. For one thing, daylightsaving will obviate that rush to get over the ramp and home before dark. Special parking arrangements are in hand to facilitate handling of cars. No private cars will be allowed on the beach beyond the judge's box on the day of the races. The racing track must be kept clear. BALLOON TYRE PRESSURE ATTENTION TO VALVES Because the valve is, of course, the most likely point at which a loss of air can take place, investigations were recently conducted in America to determine the percentage of leaky valves In tyres in actual service, says “Goodyear News.” It should be remembered that the valve inside is a delicate piece of mechanism and its air-sealing qualities depend entirely upon the little brass cone obtaining a perfect seating into the rubber gasket which is placed within the brass cup just above the springs of the valve plunger. Any small particles of dirt or even grease might interfere with the proper functioning of the valve inside at this point, causing leakage. And, moreover, this seal must be broken each time the tyre is inflated, and the sipall piece of dirt necessary to cause leakage may enter the valve at any time during inflation and lodge upon the seating, so that the owner cannot be sure that when he obtains an airtight valve after one inflation, it will continue when the tyre is inflated again. CHECK VALVES REGULARLY

In other words, he should make a constant check to be sure lack of suflicient air pressure Is not robbing him of tyre mileage. He should take care that valves are properly cared for and inspected at regular intervals. Another interesting point developed in the survey was that of the total 1,087 tyres checked, approximately 20 per cent, were found in which the valve cap was not screwed on the valve tight enough to obtain a secondary seal, which could be obtained were it properly placed on the valve.

One hundred and seventy-three tyres, or 16 per cent, of the total, had neither valve cap nor dust cap, and so were entirely dependent upon the valve inside for retaining the air pressure. URGE USE OF CAPS
