CRIME IN AMERICA

ACTRESS MURDERED AND ROBBED BOLD CRIMINALS AT WORK Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright NEW YORK, Monday. New York has another murder mystery. Mary Harrington, a vaudeville actress, was found beaten to death and robbed of jewellery valued at £30,000 in a handsomely furnished up-town apartment. I A message from Scranton, Penn sylvania, says three persons were injured and much property was damaged when the plant of a local afternoon newspaper, the “Sun,” was bombed as a result of Its campaign against the criminal element in the city. The New Year was just being rung in and large crowds were in the streets. Those in the neighbourhood were showered with glass and debris. The detonation damaged many buildings besides the “Sun” offices. CHICAGO BANK ROBBED A well-planned and executed robbery occurred in Chicago and resulted in the loss of £16,000 by the Ravenswood National Bank. Seven robbers entered the home of the paying teller late at night on tie pretext that they were prohibition agents. They tied and muffled the teller’s parents and mounted a guard over them in a vacant garage. Then they drove off with the teller to the bank, where they compelled him

to open the doors with his keys. Afterwards they waited patiently until eight o’clock in the morning, when the time-clock vault was set for opening. They then compelled the teller to swing open the doors, and extracted the money from the vault and disappeared in a motor-car. MANY SHOPS ENTERED A message from Galesburg, Illinois, says 32 shops in the principal thoroughfare of the town* were broken into and robbed last night. Every variety of establishment was entered, and all kinds of goods were removed. A week ago 12 shops were entered by burglars and the following night four more were robbed. All cases are believed to he the work of one band. No arrests have been made.—A. and N.Z.Sun.
