RAID IN WHANGAREI

- BQOKMAKING CHARGES A GIRL IN THE CASE (From Our Own Correspondent.) ■WHANGAREI, To-day. As a result of a police raid on Saturday afternon on the Ritz Buildings, Bank Street, Whangarei, Ernest Alfred Lacey appeared before Mr. L. J. Brake, J.P., this morning charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker and was charged with keeping a common gaming house, and a lady assistant was charged with assisting in the management of a common gaming house. Mr. R. K. Trimmer, counsel for defendant, asked for the suppression of the names, but the Bench refused. The Senior-Sergeant of police, as prosecutor, suggested the suppression of the lady’s name as she was only a young girl and the question was left to the courtesy of the Press. Both accused were remanded until August 29. The girl had previously been convicted. Bail was allowed in £SO and two sureties for a like sum in each case.
