School Cocoa Fund. —Residents of Glen Eden have been very generous in helping the school cocoa fund, and each child now receives a hot drink daily.

Typhoid Among Maoris. —A suspected outbreak of typhoid among the Maoris is reported from Terina, near Ivakahi. Two cases have been admitted to the Taumarunui Hospital.

Improving Playing Area. —Glen Eden School Commitee has made arrangements to take over a piece of level land for the playground in exchange for an area unsuitable for school purposes.

A Fall Downstairs. —Mr. Thomas Bird, of Tauranga, slipped on his stairs on Monday evening and received a severe cut on his face, injuring one eye and was badly bruised and shaken.

Fishermen Return. —Two New Zealand launchmen, Messrs. Peter Williams and Francis Arlidge, have just returned to Russell after a trip with Mr. Zane Grey to the Society Islands. They had good sport, but prefer New Zealand waters.

Motorist Fined. A Whangarei farmer, named Edgar S. Edge, was yesterday fined £ls and costs, £2 11s, for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car. The conviction also carried an endorsement of his licence for 12 months.

Avondale Merger. —Another stage in the campaign connected with the Avondale merger proposal will be introduced this evening, when speakers from the city will lend their support thereto. They comprise Messrs. M. J. Coyle, J. A. C. Allum, Oscar Mcßrine and E. J. Phelan.

Leg Fractured by Beam. —Through being struck by a heavy piece of timber while working in the Leyland O’Brien timber yard in Fanshawe Street yesterday, Mr, Thomas Nicholson had his right leg fractured. He was taken to the Auckland Hospital by the St. John Ambulance, and is progressing favourably.

A Glen Eden Correction. —The statement published in yesterday’s SUN that Mr. West was the only dissentient against the payment of an account for a copy of the Water Commission’s report, at a meeting of the Glen Eden Town Board, omitted to state that anether member of the board, Mr. J. H. Hayes, also opposed the payment and recorded his vote against it.

Unknown Man Injured. —Knocked down by a motor-car in the city about 9 o’clock last evening, a man, whose identity has not yet been established, was taken to the Auckland Hospital in a private car suffering from severe head injuries. He is still unconscious, but is not thought to be in a serious condition. Young Man Found Shot. —Hector McMillan, aged 24 years, son of the Mayor of Stratford, Mr. J. W. McMillan, was found shot dead this morning on the tennis court with a revolver beside the body. He had a very brilliant career at school, but some time ago his health suffered as a result of over study. Bible-In-Schools. —Members of the Wellington School Committees’ Association, on a majority vote, decided against the introduction of Bible-read-ing in schools. There was some lively discussion, and it was ultimately decided by 12 votes to eight, that the vigilance committee which was set up to watch matters of educational interest coming before Parliament should register the association’s protest before the Religious Exercises in Schools Bill is dealt with in the House.
