RELIEF WORK MUST BE FOUND
POSITION IN HAMILTON NEVER SO BAD (From Our Oicn Correspondent.) HAMILTON, To-day. '‘THERE is no question that we shall have to find some money to keep the ‘wolf from the door’ in many homes. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the position so bad as during the past three weeks.” Thus declared the Mayor, Mr. J. K. Fow, when suggestions were put before the Hamilton Borough Council last night by the borough engineer for relief employment. Agreement was expressed with the proposal, but the question was referred to the Works Committee to decide the nature of the relief work to be undertaken and report to a special meeting of the council. “Seeing what I see of a good many of these people we will not be doing our duty if we don’t provide work,” said the Mayor. The engineer’s report stated that there was considerable unemployment and 40 men were on the relief list. He suggested raising a small loan and put forward proposals for certain works involving £1,200 for labour costs and £4OO for cartage and materials. The Government subsidy for the work would be £ 600, leaving the council to raise £I,OOO.
A suggestion was made that the council consider a relief loan to carry out urgent extensions to the stormwater system.
