PLAYERS FOR REPS. BUTLER NOT NOTIFIED MAORI TEAM BELOV/ STANDARD Casual management was evident in connection with the Rugby represen-

tative match on Saturday. Though not among the 18 playvs selected the previous Saturday, late last week V. Butler, the University fullback, was added to a teamlist published in the Press. But he was not informed that he was wanted, and he did not see

the newspaper until he was on the way to Dargaville with the University team, which played Northern Wairoa on Saturday. LAST-MINUTE CALLS Consequently Singleton, of Grammar Old Boys, was called on at the last moment to play fullback for Auckland, Paewai having donned the Maori team’s colours. Du Chateau, the College Rifles half, was in the same position as Butler. Though not considered good enough to be named in the original selection, he was called on near the end of the week to join the reserves for the match. Butler was treated in exactly the same way for the prevous representative game against Thames. MAORI TEAM’S QUALITY Incidentally, the Auckland Rugby Union is entitled to complain very seriously of its treatment in connection with the Maori match. When it agreed to accept a game with the Maori team, it did so on the understanding that the team would be of some class, not an incomplete side which had to be stiffened local players. Even at that it was not a strong team.

SECONDARY SCHOOLS MOUNT ALBERT V. KINGS The Mount Albert ground was in rather a bad state after the rain, and consequently there was little back play in this match. Mount Albert, playing on their own ground, was first to adapt itself to the conditions, and attacked from the kick-off. From a free kick Bush hoisted a fine goal. In the second quarter King’s equalised, Gillett kicking a goal. Halftime came shortly afterwards, with the scores 3-all. In the third quarter each side attacked in turn, and in spite of great efforts to score neither side could gain the lead. In the final quarter King’s set up a determined attack, but was kept out till a few minutes before time, when Gould dribbled over and scored. The final whistle found play in midfield. ' Both sets of forwards played well. Gillett and Gould were outstanding for King’s, while Hodge and Fraser played well for the losers. In the backs, Hain and Milliken frequently showed out, while Bush was the mainstay of the Mount Albert team. The respective fullbacks, Browne and Hetheringtori, were called on to do a great deal of work, but both acquitted themselves well. Senior B Matches MANUKAU’S EASY WIN Manukau had an € j asy win over Technical Old Boys on Eden Park, the final score being 16 to 6. The ground was very mucky, and the heavy rain poured down steadily. Owing to the representative fixture on the adjoining ground there were few spectators. Sturney for Manukau kicked two penalties, and scored another try, which he converted himself. Ingraham and Housham were the other scorers. For Technical, J. Miller and Keane scored. Referee: Mr. Johnson. TRAMS V. SUBURBS Tramways and Suburbs had a strenuous bout, but no score was recorded on either side. CITY SCORES WELL City had a fairly easy win against Ellerslie, notching 17 points to the opposition’s solitary 3. NOT VERY SERIOUS The Varsity versus Newton match was not a very serious affair. Newton took the field three men short, and Varsity was putting up a very tall score against it. The game went to 31 to nil in favour of the students, no further score being due to the gong going probably a few moments before time. VARSITY BEATEN MATCH AT DARGAVILLE PLAY IN A QUAGMIRE The -University senior team, which visited Dargaville for a mated on Saturday, was soundly beaten by the Northern Wairoa representatives, who won by 15 to 3. A good crowd watched the match, which was played under shocking conditions, sheets of rain falling throughout. University was reinforced by Keary and Noakes (Grafton) and Syme (Ponsonby). Tries were scored for Northern Wairoa by Biddles, Gould, Wilkins. M. Rika and Matene. O’Halloran scored for University. The Rev. Matene. one of the star forwards of the Maori team, played a great game for the northerners. Leading the forwards throughout he was supported by Watson and the Rika brothers. Mr. Harding refereed. PARNELL SENIORS BEAT ROTORUA AT LEAGUE Favoured with fine weather and cheered on by a large attendance of League fans Parnell seniors defeated Rotorua at Rotorua this afternoon by 27 points to 3. In another game Parnell juniors defeated Rotorua juniors by 31-6.
