FINE BOWLING FEAT

PROFESSIONAL’S TEN WICKETS PLAYERS V. GENTLEMEN By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright LONDON, Saturday. The cricket match, Gentlemen v. Players, ended in a draw to-day. In the Gentlemen’s first innings all were disposed of for 80 runs, Kennedy taking 10 wickets for 37. In their second innings the Gentlemen made 181 for eight wickets (Kennedy two for 21). The rain on Thursday was followed by hot sunshine to-day, and this made the pitch very treacherous before luncheon. Kennedy pitched the ball between the middle and the leg stumps, turning it a little from the leg, when it rose quickly. This break was obtained by a cut in the ball, not by a fingerspin. It combined complete accuracy with length. Kennedy had Parsons, Mead and Hendren fielding in the slips, and two other men at. short leg. Hearne, who was bowling at the other end, was possibly indulgent with the last wicket, as he missed an easy chance of catching and bowling the batsman, enabling Kennedy to accomplish the feat. Kennedy’s feat has only been paralleled once in a Gentlemen v. Players match, namely, by Fielder, the Kent bowler, in 1906. —A. and N.Z. There are 36 occasions recorded in firstclass cricket in England when a bowler has taken all 10 wickets in an innings. In 1545 a Notts player, W. Clarke, disposed of all the Leicestershire side. The last time the feat was performed by H. Howell, bowling for Warwickshire v. Yorkshire at Edgbaston in 1923. G. C. Collins did the same thing in 1922, bowling for Kent v. Notts at Dover. In 1921 five bowlers accomplished the feat, namely, W. Bestwick, for Derbyshire v. Glamorgan at Cardiff; A. A. Mailey, for Australia v. Gloucestershire at Cheltenham; J. C. White, for Somerset v. Worcestershire at Worcester; T. W. Rushby, for Surrey v. Somerset at Taunton; and C. W. L. Parker, for Gloucestershire v. Somerset at Bristol.
