Aichdeacon Williams arrived in Auckland yesterday morning by the express from Palmerston North. Mr. J- S. Dickson, M.P., arrived in Auckland yesterday morning from Wellington. The secretary of the Auckland Racing Club, Mr. W. S. Spence, left by train for Wellington yesterday evening. Mr. Robert Gibbons, managing director of the Colonial Motor Company, Ltd., arrived from Wellington this morning. Mr. E. C. Gage, Chief Telegraph Engineer, Auckland, left by motor for the King Country this morning. Later he will go on to Wellington. Mr. W. D. Hunt, Mr. R. H. Brown, and Mr. H. K. McKenzie were among the passengers who left for the South by the Limited last evening. Mr. A. Whitley, the representative of Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth, Ltd., has arrived in Auckland after a visit to Arapuni. He is staying at the Hotel Cargen. Mr. J. A. Patterson, of the clerical staff of the Auckland Railway Station, who has been transferred to Mangatainoka, was presented with a smoking outfit by his fellow workers at a farewell function on Saturday afternoon. Mr. A. Schnack, the well-known bandsman, was appointed adjudicator at the B grade band contest, to be held at Temuka about Christmas, at a recant meeting of the South Island Bands’ Association. Mr. J. Farrell, a well-known member of the manageral staff of J. C. Williamson, Ltd., who recently was operated upon for appendicitis, has sufficiently recovered to be able to leave the hospital, and is now staying with his brother in Oriental Bay. Dr. Alexander Goldstein, the representative of the Palestine Foundation Fund, will spend two days in Rotorua later in the week. From there he will proceed to Wellington, where he will receive a civic welcome. Mr. Gilbert Archey, curator of the Auckland Museum, took his seat on the Maori Arts and Crafts Board, which met in Wellington at the weekend. Mr. Archey is the successor to Dr. Peter Buck. He was cordially welcomed by the chairman, the Hon. R. F. Bollard. Lieutenant-Commander F. H. Jefferson, of the Royal Canadian Navy, has been promoted to the rank of Commander. Commander Jefferson, who is the son of Mr. J. M. Jefferson, of Epsom, was educated at the Auckland Grammar School and served in the navy during the war. In the Legislative Council on Friday the Hon. T. Shailer Weston was granted 14 days’ leave of absence on account of illness. The leader of the Council, Sir Francis Bell, said he understood that Mr. Weston was very seriously ill, and he had conveyed to Mrs. Weston a message of anxiety and sympathy on behalf of the Council.
