AFTER MANY YEARS

SLOT TELEPHONES PROVIDED It is a long lane that has no turning, and, apparently, it is a long official Government promise that does not come true. For over 10 years Devonport has been promised additional slot telephones “in about six months’ time.” Letters to the Post and Telegraph Department, deputations to Ministers of the Crown, and visits to Wellington always drew that promise of "six months hence.” On Thursday afternoon the Post and Telegraph Department se.t about redeeming its promise, and by the weekend had made fair progress with the erection of seven additional slot phones, located at Stanley Bay Wharf head, Calliope Road junction with Clarence Street, Victoria Road and Clarence Street corner, Victoria Road and Alison Avenue corner, Lake Road and Old Lake Road corner, and Old Lake Road, near Narrow Neck Beach. The telephone booths are of a aew type, cylindrical ferro-concrete structures, painted grey, with barred windows and sliding doors; this latter idea gets over the difficulty experienced in the old-type booth of closing the door from the inside. Takapuna has for some years been asking for additional slot-phones, and probably will now have its opportunity.
