It is stated that the underwriters receive about 90 per cent, of the Commonwealth loan of £ 7,000,000. —A. and N.Z. The loan was 5 per cent, stock, repayable in 1975, or on or after 1945 on three months’ notice. The price of issue was 98, giving an effective yield, presuming redemption at the later date, of about £5 2s 3d. The Commonwealth issued a conversion loan of over £11,000.0(H) on exactly the same terms in April, 27 per cent, being left with the underwriters.

In the United States of America the vagaries of the demand, ever changing from one grade to another, checks any tendency for importers to handle large parcels unless sold to arrive to the manufacturer. Indications are that little change for the better can be expected in the English market for some months. A brighter tone is registered with regard to Continental business though, as yet little business is reported. Quite a number of small orders ha>e been put through locally during VJ. past week at current prices, and hot the Port Hardy and Remuera. this week, carry parcels for New Y° r and London. .
