GARDENING HINTS
When leeks are swelling, treat liberally with liquid manure and hill them over the necks. Weak nitrate of soda is also a tonic. Any that show signs of going to seed should be pulled and used at once. The same treatment will help eschalots to develop.
When digging dead leaves into the soil sprinkle them with salt. This is specially good for light soils. Freshlyfallen leaves are best, as they generate a good heat, but old leaves mixed with stable manure make fine hotbed material. A bed of leaves under a frame can be used for raising early seeds.
When cutting daphne flowers use a sharp knife in order to keep the trees in a good shape, especially if the cuttings are made well back, to near the “eyes.” Liberal helping of water and liquid manure will add to the size and perfume of the blooms.
