DEBATE IN PARLIAMENT AMENDMENTS REJECTED By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright LONDON, Friday. The committee stage on the Finance Bill was concluded in the House of Commons last evening. The amendment moved by Sir Cooper Rawson, Conservative member for Brighton, to increase the preference on Empire brandy from 2s 6d to 10s was opposed by the Attorney-Gen-eral, Sir D. Hogg, and negatived without a division.

Mr. H. Dalton, Labour member for Peckham, moved to repeal the sugar duties. Mr. P. H. Hannan, Conservative member for Moseley, Birmingham, urged that the output from the British refineries should enjoy an Empire preferential duty.

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Mr. Ronald McNeil, retorted that it would cost the country £11.500,000 a year.

The motion was rejected by 245 votes to 128.

Mr. F. A. Macquiston, Conservative member for Argyll, moved to reduce the duty on whisky from 72s 6d to 30s. This, he said, would permit whisky to be sold at 6s a bottle instead of at 12s 6d and would mean trebling the consumption The motion was rejected without division.—A. and N.Z.Sun.
