RECORD PRICES FOR OLD MASTERS
TWO TURNERS SOLD FAMOUS ROSS COLLECTION By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright Reed 8.30 a.m. LONDON. Friday. At Christie’s saleroom Turner’s two-by-three feet picture, “Venice Dogana and Salute,” realised 29,000 guineas, a record for a small Turner. This picture sold in 1599 for 8,200 guineas.
Turner’s “City of Utrecht” realised 8,500 guineas, compared with 6,400 guineas in 1895. Rembrandt’s “Portrait of a Man” fetched 30,000 guineas, a record for a Rembrandt in London. The occasion was the sale of the famous Ross collection, brought from Montreal, comprising 29 pictures. All sold in less than an hour for over 136,000 guineas.—A. and N.Z.
