GISBORNE, To-day. BURGLAR had an exciting time at Te Karaka in the early hours of this morning. For some days Mr. Nesbitt, storekeeper, suspected that someone had been entering his store overnight, and his suspicions were confirmed by the theft of £3 from his till on Monday night. Shortly after one o’clock this morning he heard a noise from the store, which is adjacent to his residence, and went to investigate. He found the back door open, and was
about to enter when it was slammed in his face.
Assistance was immediately obtained, and the intruder was trapped inside the building. He endeavoured to break through the front door, but was confronted by several residents, and driven inside again. Then an entrance was forced through the back dor, but the burglar, in the meantime, broke a front window and dashed through, avoiding the guard which had been set.
The intruder was seen by the light of an electric torch, and further developments are expected.
