STORMS IN ENGLAND

LIGHTNING REVEALS FRENCH COAST (.British Official Wireless .) RUGBY, Thursday. Severe rainstorms swept southern England and northern France last night, and heavy falls were general throughout the country. The storm was accompanied by lightning and thunder in many places. During brilliant flashes at Folkestone, the French coast was visible across the Straits of Dover. Some hundreds of tons of cliff fell into the sea near Margate, but the heaviest rainfall was recorded at Clacton-on-Sea, in Essex, where in 13 hours nearly three inches were registered, almost half as much again as usually falls during the whole of July. Dover recorded 2.81 inches, which is the heaviest experienced for many years.

In many places roads became impassable owing to floods, and fields were submerged.—A. and N.Z.
