BENEVOLENT SOCIETY

42 YEARS’ RELIEF WORK PUBLIC APPEAL PROPOSED For 42 years the Auckland Benevolent Society has been working. Yesterday the annual meeting of the society was held. Contrary to popular impression, stated the report, hospital relief and old-age pensions did not render the society superfluous. There were deserving necessitous cases of folk who had seen better days, and who, in declining years, found themselves bereft of friends and of money. These shrink from disclosing their need, and there is no aid for them except through the society. Then there were wives and children destitute or deserted, to whom the society reached out a hand. The report expressed gratitude to subscribers, and mentioned the bequest of £2OO in the will of the late Sir Henry Brett, and the birthday gift of £IOO from Mr. Moss Davis. London. During the year £845 10s 5d had been spent in relief. Income totalled £546 3s Sd, and assets £3,204 36s 6d. It was decided that in view of the excess of expenditure over income a public appeal was necessary, but the present time was deemed unsuitable. The following officers were elected: President, Mr. John F. Ewen; vicepresidents, Rabbi S. A., Goldstein, Revs. W. E. Gillam and E. C. Budd, Messrs. N. A. Nathan, H. B. Morton, and C. V. Houghton; committee, Sir E. Mitchelson, Hon. George Fowlds, Canon Grant Co wen, Revs. C. IT. Laws, E. Drake, F. W. Young, Gordon Bell, Lamb Harvey, F. B. Barton. Messrs. M. Copeland, H. Field. IT.
