CITY COUNCIL ITEMS

Owing to the indisposition of the Mayor, Air. G. Baildon, the DeputyMayor, Cr. A. J. Entrican, presided.

Proposed improvements in Carlton Road and George Street abutting on the X»omain, suggested by the Newmarket Borough Council, were referred to the Works Committee.

The Deputy-Mayor: The town clerk has now received a verbatim report of the waterworks commission’s doings. A copy will be typed and sent to each member.

It will be remembered that this report is of very considerable length, and was valued at £5 for each copy by the Government.

An offer of 378 acres in the Waitakeres, made by Dalgety and Co. for £4,536, was declined. The city engineer reported that the price asked appeared to be far in excess of pres-ent-day value.

Cr. E. J. Phelan: The question is “When is the council going to come to some decision about Belgium and Day Streets?” The Deputy-Mayor (Cr. A. J. Entrican) answered that the matter would be dealt with as an urgent matter by committees during the next fortnight.

Six lots in section 50, Ponsonby Road, previously leased on Glasgow terms to J. J. Craig Estate, at £74 5s per annum, are to be offered at £228, on a revaluation basis.

The town clerk advised that the waterworks extension loan redemption of £107,000 had been arranged by the Bank of New Zealand at 5i per cent., on a thirty-year term, bonds to be of £IOO, and the cost to the council in Auckland to be £99 10s. The terms were considered very favourable.

All the remaining T.B. shelters are to be removed from the Domain, in preparation for the work of extending the winter garden.

A portion of the Waikumete Cemetery, adjoining the soldiers’ section, is to be set aside for burial of naval men who did not serve in the war.

The thanks of the Union of Tramwaymen were extended to the council in view of it not discharging any of its staff during the present period of distress through unemployment.

The Auckland Fire Board advised that the levy on the council for the current period was £7,387.

An offer from the South British Insurance Company to take up in London at 99£ £IOO,OOO worth of Auckland City debentures at 5£ per cent., with 30 years’ currency, redeemable at bearer’s option, was accepfed.
