Tamaki and City
HITCH IN AMALGAMATION SCHEME Orakei Must Be Included DIFFICULTIES have arisen in connection with the proposal of the Tamaki Road District to join up with the City. The attitude of the City Council is that it will not have any more “principalities,” such as Newmarket, dividingportions of the City, and it is afraid that this position, may arise if Tamaki, at present unaccompanied by Orakei, is taken in.
A PEW weeks ago the City Coun- **"*■ cil decided that it would offer no objection to Tamaki joining the city provided that Orakei Road district was included in the amalgamation. NO POLL AT ORAKEI A few days ago Tamaki ratepayers decided by a large majority to join the city, but owing to the death of the Orakei chairman, or for some other reason, no poll was taken in Orakei, which is the bright spot from the city point of view in the amalgamation scheme. Unless formalities connected with the amalgamation are not complied with within 30 days from the taking of the poll the Tamaki poll will be virtually wiped out. The City Council discussed the matter last evening on a recommendation from the Legal Committee that the amalgamation should be accepted from Tamaki in the meantime.
Cr. J. B. Paterson questioned whether the council could do this. It meant rescinding a motion, which the council could not do without certain formalities, even if it wanted to, which he doubted. Several councillors opposed any suggestion of taking in Tamaki without Orakei. Cr. E. J. Phelan said the whole aspect had been considered from the position of the whole area. He was decidedly opposed to these districts coming in piece-meal. Cr. Melville said it was unfortunate in view of the poll having been taken in Tamaki, but the council must stand firm. Cr. J. Dempsey said he did not feel confident about bringing another body in divided from the city—another "Newmarket. A member: No more principalities. The committee was asked to try and solve the difficulty.
