ROTORUA BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Rotorua Borough Council met on Wednesday evening, the Mayor, Mr. T>. McDowell, presiding. A new recreation ground, five acres in extent and situate near the new High School building, is shortly to be formed. The proposal was submitted to the council that if the latter would plough and grass the area, furnish posts and wire for fencing, residents would attend to the rest of the work and equipment. The cost of levelling the ground presented a difficulty, apd pending a special report, the scheme is held in abeyance. The Public Works Department wrote stating that the total expenditure on the Manukau Road in furnishing a durable top-dressing would amount to £35,000, the bulk of which money had

already been expended. Counsels of economy were urged, but not in such a measure as to allow the road to deteriorate from its present satisfactory condition. The highway is to receive systematic and constant attention.

The Railway Department had been approached with a view to installing an automatic alarm bell at the Ranolf Street crossing. The District Traffic Manager wrote in reply stating that the department did not regard the crossing as dangerous and with the exercise of care the risk to pedestrians or to drivers of vehicles was slight.

The borough council holds a contrary opinion; the thoroughfare is a busy one and the approach to the crossing from the south side much obscured. Residents share ’the council’s opinion, and the member for the district, Air. F. F. Hockly, has been asked to take action in the matter.

A Rotorua boardinghouse proprietor was recently convicted of having killed meat in an unregistered slaughterhouse, the meat being intended for consumption within the borough. An appeal against the conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court. By Order-in-Council or amendment to the Abattoirs Act, now before Parliament, the borough council seeks to very definitely set forth the conditions under which meat can be brought into the borough. The purpose is to make compulsory the use of the municipal abattoir.
