PROPORTION OF APPRENTICES
RATIO TOO LARGE FURNITURE TRADE POSITION An application to decrease the ratio of apprentices in the furniture-making industry from one to every two journeymen to one to every three journeymen, was made to the Arbitration Court by the Furniture Trade Workers’ Union this morning. The trade was overloaded with apprentices, said Mr. N. H. Nixon, supporting the application. The proportion of apprentices was so great .as to keep journeymen out of employment. It encouraged the manufacture of furniture in the home for sale to auction marts. Employers were using the apprentice proportion for the supply of cheap labour.
Mr. S. E. Wright opposed the reduction for the employers.
The court reserved its decision. ELECTRICAL TRADES
An amendment to the electrical trades apprenticeship order was granted by the Arbitration Court this morning. The amendment whs in terms of the recommendations of the Apprenticeship Committee.
