MOTOR CRUSHED BY A TRAM
QUEEN STREET SMASH WOMAN DRIVER’S PERIL V NARROW escape from death had Mrs. A. G. Brown, of Keith Avenue, Remuera, this morning. Miraculous, too, was the escape of her small baby. "It was a wonder that both were not killed,” declared the motorman of a Remuera-bound tram after he had collided with a motor-car driven by Mrs. Brown, almost opposite His Majesty’s Theatre in Queen Street, just before noon. In attempting to back away from the footpath, it is said, Mrs. Brown, who was driving her Buick Six motor-car, did not notice the approaching tram bound for the bottom of Queen Street. Within six feet of the tram the motor-car and its two occupants suddenly appeared before the driver. To avoid a collision was too late. The motor-car was crushed between a nearby post, and badly damaged. Mrs. Brown was thrown from her seat —that portion of the car was extensively damaged—and hurled against the post, but fortunately escaped without any serious injury. Nevertheless, she received a severe shaking. The baby, in the back of the car, was violently thrown from the back seat to the floor. Likewise, the child escaped injury. It was impossible to drive the car away from the scene of the mishap. The chassis was considerably damaged, the engine being almost entirely moved from its bearings.' The wheels were twisted, the woodwork and glass broken, and generally the car received a bad buffeting. There was some delay in the Queen Street service consequent upon the trams beiu~ held up until the car was removed. The tramcar in question escaped with little damage.
