NO LEAKAGE ON TARIFF PROPOSALS
MINISTER’S ASSURANCE MR. SIDEY ASKS QUESTION (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. A leakage of information in respect to the recommendations of the Tariff Commission was suspected by Mr. J. K. Sidey. Dunedin South, who asked the Minister of Customs in the House of Representatives to-day for his assurance that no information as to the commissions findings had been divulged by him. A number of statements had been freely circulated to the effect that, the Government contemplated increased duties on certain commodities. "I have received information," he said, “from what is regarded as a wellinformed source that increased duty on motor spirit is contemplated. This would be strenuously opposed.” The Minister of Customs (Hon. W. Downie Stewart) gave Mr. Sidey a ready assurance that no information had been divulged by him. These hazards were guess work and speculation which always happened when a revision of the* tariff was contemplated. Neither he nor other Ministers knew the recommendations of the commission.
