THE STRAND

HUMPHREY BISHOP CO The Humphrey Bishop Company has been famed for its sparkle and for the surprises which are continually being unfolded. When the company opened at Christchurch early this year the Christchurch “Press” was wholehearted in describing the show as one of the finest of its kind to ever visit the Dominion. A month later, when the company paid its return visit, same paper said: “No better tribute to the popularity of the Humphrey Bishop Company and no more striking indication of the place it holds in the estimation of the Christchurch public could have been offered than the liberal patronage on the company’s opening night at the Theatre Royal. When the curtain rose every seat in the house was occupied, and unstinted applause encouraged the clever band of entertainers throughout the sparkling performance. Nothing quite so good of its kind has been seen here.” They are playing at the Strand, and no Aucklander should miss them. The leading pictorial attraction is “The Ranger of the Big Pines,” an adaptation of Hamlin Garland’s novel,

“Cavanagh, Forest Ranger.” and tells the story of a feudal warfare that is waged between the rangers, the only representatives of the law in the extensive cattle lands in the Rocky Mountains district of the United States. Kenneth Harlan has the principal role, that of a trooper in the Forest Rangers, while the leading feminine role is played by Helen Costello. Other prominent characters are portrayed by Eulalie Jensen, Lew Hs.rvey and Will Walling. A feature of the film is the variety of picturesque and spectacular scenery, which forms a background in a number of scenes. The latest Strand Magazine is also screened, while a selected musical score is played by the Strand Symphony Orchestra-
