COAL SELLING
SIZE OF SACKS GOVERNMENT REGULATION Hawkers who are said to sell a sack of coal for 3s 6d and 4s 6d, seem to be running a risk. Government regulations are strict on the subject of the retailing of coal. The fuel has to be sold in net weights of lewt. or 1 2-3 cwt., or multiples of those weights. The bags have to be sealed and stamped with the weight contained. Dealers usually make 12 sacks go to the ton, and the net weight of ihe coal in each is about 1861 b. For household coal the price is 6s 6d net and for kitchen coal 5s 6d net. If this is the price agreed by the dealers to be reasonable, it seems to show that the hawker who sells a sack for 3s 6d is either making a loss or giving light-weight.
