The Cinderella of Children’s Homes
RICHMOND ROAD ORPHANAGE A FINANCIAL IMPROVEMENT “This has been the Cinderella of children's homes in Auckland," said Archdeacon Mac Murray at the 17th annual meeting of the Richmond Road Children’s Home on Saturday. The Archdeacon said that the home, although lacking endowment, had greatly improved its financial position of late. "This honest, faithful effort to aid children in need is becoming better known," said Archdeacon Mac Murray, “and the generous-hearted public of Auckland will not leave us lacking." He added that the institution met the call for a home for poor children. In a measure he regretted that it was not now confined to girls, for there was also an urgent demand for a similar institution for boys. Archbishop Averill said he had been startled at the extent of the improvements needed. The appeal for funds had proved very successful, however, and he hoped it would be the beginning of bigger things in the history of the home. Although the balance sheet revealed a debit on the year’s working of £llO 7s 2d, it was £256 Is 3d less than the 1926 deficit. Donations during the year had increased by £268 14s sd, and expenditure on food and clothing had been reduced by £225 13s 4d.
