A LEGAL TANGLE The “hocus-pocus science of law” was clearly illustrated in the Onehunga Police Court this morning, affecting the trials and troubles experienced by the police force in connection with the Act concerning the licensing and ownership of motor-vehicles and bicycles. Strolling through Mangere at night-time, Police-constable Putt came across a motor-bicycle lying flat alongside the public roadway. A little search brought to 'light the pre-supposed owner, who was asked to explain the reason for the abandoned machine, left without a light. Then came a legal tangle, which the court had to unravel. Sergeant Cruickshank could only presume that the machine had changed hands as far back as October last, and two persons were summoned for having failed to notify such change of ownership. One was away at Wairoa and unable to appear; the other, representing a local firm of cycle works, also failed to put in an appearance. For leaving the bicycle without a light, Lancelot Kivell was fined 20s and 10s costs; for failing to notify change of ownership Harry F. K. Turner was ealled upon to pay 10s and 12s costs; and for a similar failing the Pioneer Cycle Works were mulcted in the total sum of 33'V
