THE KITCHEN CAT
I wish I had some rabbits in a little rabbit-hutch, They have such funny habits, and I love them very much. I wish I had a squirrel, or some white mice or a rat, But the only pet that I can have is just the kitchen cat. I wish I had some tadpoles, to see them grow to frogs, I wish I had some puppies of any kind of dogs, I wish I had a guinea-pig, or anything like that, But the only pet that I can have is just the kitchen cat. I wish I had a pony or a donkey of my own; I’d like to keep a baby lamb till it was fully grown. Mother says it's no use wishing, 'cause we live in a flat. And the only pet that I can have is just the kitchen cat! THE GINGERBREAD HOUSE I dreamt that my house had gingerbread walls, And fairies and goblins paid me calls. I rode to school on a tortoiseshell cat. And I wore a weathercock in my hat! But a hurricane blew my hat away, And my tortoiseshell cat she went astray. And then I dreamt that a greedy-eyed mouse, Ate up the walls of my gingerbread house! And I gave a loud snore, and I gave a big lurch, And the beadle turned me out of the church! A RIDDLE What was the first kind of a tree to grow in England?—A wooden one. —Sent in by Marjorie Hetherington.
