THE GUARDIANS
The room is dark, But the fire is lit; And round the light In a circle sit My five black aunts, Who nod and knit. The room is dark But the darknes dare Not pass each silent, Straight-backed chair. And the five black ladies Knitting there. But on the rug, Where all is bright, There’s room for me In the dancing light; Warm and safe From the creeping night. IN JAPAN Did you know that if you lived in Japan you would be older than you are living here? It is so, for there is a very curious custom in Japan which has to do with the age of a baby. When a baby has been alive a year and its first birthday comes round we say here that it is one year old. But in Japan they say instead that baby is two years old. So, you see, you would be one year older if you lived in Japan. And you might even be older still if your birthday happened to come on December 31. Suppose you were born on tliis day a few hours before the end of the old year. Well, as soon as the new year had arrived you would be reckoned to be two years old, though really you were only a few hours old! Isn’t this a funky custom?
