BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH
The Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeates, presided at the meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council last night. information was received from the district telegraph engineer, to the effect that it was impracticable to link up the Birkenhead and Northcote subscribers with the Takapuna automatic exchange where the accommodation was limited and designed for Takapuna subscribers only. The council has now decided to ascertain whether the Birkenhead and Northcote Councils could guarantee the equivalent revenue of 200 subscribers, and to ask the department if it would be prepared to instal the automatic service for Birkenhead, Northcote and Birkdale, if the guarantee were given. It was agreed to subsidise £ for £ a sum of £3O to be received from the Returned Soldiers’ Association for the employment of ex-soldiers in the borough. The annual donation of £lO 10s to the funds of the borough band was voted. A by-laws committee consisting of the Mayor, Messrs. Hatfield, Campbell and Hewson, was set up lo act in conjunction with a similar committee to be set up by the Northcote Council, with a view to obtaining uniform bylaws for the two boroughs.
