83 AND HOMELESS
BACK TO THE INFIRMARY WILL STAY THIS TIME Life has been hard to Thomas Robert Dillon. He is 83. white-haired and tottering, and he has not only “nowhere to lay his head” but no money, with the exception of his oldage pension. That he has been homeless of late, however, has been no one’s fault but his own. He has been in and out of the Auckland Infirmary and most other charitable institutions for more than 20 years, and had wandered away from each of them. At 6.30 a.m. on March 29 he was found by Constable. Shields on the railway station and lodged in the lockup. Eight days in custody apparently led the old man to see the folly of wandering aimlessly while shelter was to be had —other than gaol, so he wrote a letter to the Bench, which Mr. Hunt. S.M., read out in court this morning, to the effect that he was prepared to go back to the infirmary. The charge against the octagenarian was dismissed on this condition. “Oh. yes." he quavered, when he was asked would he stay there this time.
