TRUSTEES RETURNED
UNAVAILING CRITICISM BLIND INSTITUTE’S DIRECTION MR. MORTON ALDIS DEFEATED Despite trenchant criticism of late concerning the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, the retiring trustees. Mr. H. E. Vaile and Mr. F. W. Wake, were re-elected by overwhelming majorities. Mr. Vaile was unanimously reappointed chairman. Voting at the annual meeting of contributors yesterday was: Mr. Vaile. 104: Mr. Wake. 101: Mr. Morton Aldis, 17; Mrs. M. Dreaver, 13. The attendance, doubtless the result of attacks on the board of trustees by the late secretary. Mr. Aldis. was one of the largest known at ;.n annual meeting for a considerable period. “Mr. Aldis failed to give the director. Mr. Clutha Mackenzie, the full support that he should have received from him,” declared the Hon. George Fowlds, a member of the board, after reviewing the circumstances which led to Mr. Mackenzie’s appointment. The manner in which Mr. Mackenzie had carried out his duties said Mr. Fowlds, had more than favourably impressed Auckland citizens. Commenting on a recent meeting ad - dressed by Mr. Aldis, which he had attended, Mr. Fowlds said: "Mr Aldis made me appear almost as bad as Mr Mackenzie, and that was very bad indeed.” (Laughter.) The charges by Mr. Aldis, he added, were really “a serious injustice to all concerned in the management of the institute.” "Mr. Fowlds has by no means accurately described my attitude to Mr. Mackenzie,” denied Mr. Aldis in the course of a brief statement. He claimed that the inmates of the institute should have some share in its direction, as, “after all, they were the people most vitally concerned in its management.” In turn, Mr. Aldis accused the chairman, Mr. Vaile, of to (he institute and endeavouring to dissuade the inmates from voting against his nomination for a trusteeship. Mr. Vaile: Never at any tim- have I done so! This statement is entirely contrary to fact. Mr. Aldis: One of the men told me so. . . . He said that you told him that my election would lead to chaos.” “Bring the man here,” replied Mr. Vaile, amidst applause, “and I will disprove your statement.”
