A BRAVE SHOWING
AUCKLAND’S 26 MAYORS "AND TWENTY-SIX WIVES” Referring at yesterday’s sitting of the Royal Water Commission to the number of local bodies to be found in the Auckland district, Mr. A. H. Johnstone, who appeared for the Auckland City Council, gave it as his opinion that there were far too many local bodies in existence. As far as I can see, remarked Mr. Johnstone, their only use is the very useful showing the 26 mayors and 26 wives make when a reception to some person cf high estate is taking place. “They are not all mayors,” objected Mr. Rogerson. “Some of them are chairmen.”
“Perhaps so,” replied Mr. Johnstone, ‘but they are always there.”
