WHAT TO DO
THE NURSERY An easy way of making an attractive rug for the nursery or children’s bedroom:—Cut paper patterns in outline of animals—cat, dog, horse, elephant, and so on—and then with these patterns cut the animals from red and yellow flannel. Paste them on a square or circle of light blue felt and fasten down with buttonhole stitch. Add a few stitches with black and white thread to bring out the features and the result will be an interesting menagerie for the nursery floor of unending delight for the little folk. ELECTRIFY THE FURNITURE A novel, modern idea to add to the beauty and convenience of the furniture and to hide unsightly cords, is to electrify the furniture. The dressing-table, for instance, may have a bracket with a small lamp and shade fitted on to each mirror standard, from which flexible wires meet at the back and connect to a plug in the skirting board. A wardrobe or linen chest may be fitted with a low-power lamp to illuminate the darkest recesses. This can be controlled by an automatic switch which operates with the opening and closing of the door. A sideboard may be electrified to carry a lamp or two, an electric toaster, kettle or coffee-percolater, the wires connecting at the back. In this manner everything may be served hot, without any disfigurement or damage to the sideboard, and with no untidy wires apparent.
