Watts. Newmarket Borough Council.—Mrs. A. J. Dreaver. Commenting on the general trend of municipal elections in Auckland. Mr. Stove said it was a noticeable fact that, since the Labour Party had been offering candidates. their opponents had declared a platform. In the past only a small percentage of citizens had exercised their rights at the elections, whereas now there was keen interest shown, and candidates made sure their adherents were on the roll. “This added interest is something that will certainly tend for betterment in civic matters, and consequently is something to our credit,” added Mr. Stove. Mr. H. Oakley Browne, who contested City East at the last Parliamentary elections, has decided to become a candidate for a seat on the city council. Mr. Browne will stand as a straight-out independent, as he considers the present muddle in civic affairs largely due to voting on tickets and the bloc system generally.
