IN SEMI-FINALS

NEW ZEALAND GOLFERS MRS. FULLERTON-SMITH INFORM. J, / 'V - ... . Miss Kay Has Hard Match Ahead. PROSPECTS FOR FINAL. Press Association —Copyright. Adelaide, Aug. 3L The quarter-finals of the women's golf championship of Australia were played to-day in brilliant sunshine and excellent conditions. Both Miss Oliver Kay and Mrs. Fullerton-Smith, the New Zealanders, entered the semi-finals. Many followers of the game expect the New Zealanders will contest the final.

In the quarter-finals Mrs. McKenzie played a solid game but Miss Kay always had a little in hand. Her long game was good, particularly her drives, but she was unlucky on some greens. Putts of seven feet and less repeatedly hit the back of the cup, stayed out or ran past. Miss Kay went out in 42 to stand 1 up. She lost the next two holes but won three of the succeeding four and clinched the match by taking the 17th. with a par five. Miss V. Fleming (N.Z.) won the first two holes with stymies, but three putts on the fourth green made her only 1 up. She turned for home 3 up. Miss Hutton then began a devastating run, winning five holes in succession. Miss Fleming took the 15th. with a fine birdie four and squared the match at the short 16th. The next was halved but the Victorian took the match with a par four at the last when Miss Fleming duffed her iron second.

; Mrs. Fullerton-Smith had only one bad hole on the outward run, which she covered in 42. This was at the third, where she drove into the sand and took seven, losing the hole. Otherwise she was in fine form, turning 3 up. She took the 10th. and lost the next two through weak seconds. She made a magnificent recovery at the 13th., a dog leg hole, where she pulled her drive into the sand. The lie v/as good and she played a wood and reached the green. Her approach putt was short, leaving a downhill putt of 12 feet, but she sank it for a win. She also won the next, although both played badly. Then she halved the 15th. for the match. She appeared a little nervous after the turn. The greatest surprise was Mrs. Negus' defeat of Mrs. Clements, the only Australian woman on scratch. The golf played by Mrs. Negus was not good, but Mrs. Clements was appalling. She took 51 out and was four down. Her chip shots were extremely weak. Mrs. Clements began to play better on the home run after losing the tenth, but she was too far behind, although she won three holes in a row. Sue stymied Mrs. Negus at the 16th. from 18 inches when Mrs. Negus was dormie three. They halved the 17th., where the, match ended. Mrs. Fullerton-Smith should beat Mrs. Negus, but Miss Kay will have to be at her best to beat Miss Hutton, who is the most improved golfer in Victoria this season. Results of the quarter-finals are:— Miss O. Kay (N.Z.) beat Miss McKenzie (Victoria), 2 and 1. Mrs. Fullerton-Smith (N.Z.) beat Mrs. Britten-Jones (S. Australia), 4 and 3. Mrs. Negus (W. Australia) beat Mrs. Clements (N.S.W.), 2 and 1. Miss Hutton (Victoria) beat Miss V. Fleming (N.Z.), 1 up. To-morrow Mrs. Fullerton-Smith will meet Mrs. Negus and Miss Kay will meet Miss Hutton.
