SINGULAR POSITION IN TARANAKI NORTHERN DIVISION STRATFORD FIGHT HARD AGAINST CLIFTON. KAPONGA SUPREME IN THE SOUTH. Clifton were unable to add Stratford to the list of their victories in the final game of the first round of the Northern Division Rugby Competition at Stratford on Saturday. In a hard-fought match, attended by the biggest crowd seen at Victoria Park this year, the home team prevailed over the hitherto unbeaten Clifton side by 8 points to 5. Tukapa won comfortably from New Plymouth Star.. United Old Boys were too strong for New Plymouth Old Boys. The start of the second round will see Clifton, Stratford, and Tukapa on level terms with one loss each, and United Old Boys the next I best team in the division. Despite wet grounds and a greasy ball, play was bright in South Taranaki. Kaponga were held to a score of 3—3 at half-time by Patea, but developed superiority, back and forward, in the second spell, profiting by Patea's mistakes, to win 12—8. Hawera were held by Eltham also in the first spell, but settled down to win in the end by 31 to 6. OpUV nake and Okaiawa had wins against Athletic and Waimate by 15 to 6 and 13to 6. The only alteration in the points table was that Opunake moved to fourth place ahead of Patea, which has a game in hand.
