UNITED THEY STAND

N.P. OLD BOYS BEATEN. Overwhelmed In Both Forwards And Backs. A 28—8 WIN. United Old Boys defeated New Plymouth Old Boys, at New Plymouth, on Saturday, by 28 points to 8. < Showing superiority in every department of the game United were always masters of the situation and scored eight triea to their opponents two. The New Plymouth team were without the services of Galbraith, the representative five-eighths, who was injured in a previous game. During the game they alto lost Priar, the full-back. It was necessary'to take a man out of the forwards and play the remainder of the match a man s*hor» as there was no one available to fill the vacancy.

A big factor in United Old Boys' snipe;iority was the play of their forward pack. Bigger and heavier thai* the New Plymouth pack, they dominated the scrums and line outs and showed greater dash in the. open. United's backs threw the ball about freely and provided pleating football, but an inclination to take the ball whilst on flat feet, detracted from the speed and - effectuality of some of their movements. Hoskin, the New Plymouth Old Boys' half-back, played a splendid game but the men outside him showed little co-ordination and the wing three-quarters were starved. The teajns were:— United Old Boys: Ludlam; CochTane, McCready, L. Lash; F. Adiara, A. Lash; w. Lash; Murphy, Kofoed, Walker, Thomson, Heath, O'Keefe, Goodman, Bulmer.

• Oid Boys: Priar; South, Richardpon, Ford; Crone, Meredith; Hoskin; Somerton, Wheeler, Evans, Wakelin, Elmes, Ulenberg, Davidson, Rogers'. From a scrum in me New Plymouth tWenty-five W. Lash sent the ball out via A. Lash to Adlam, who shot straight through to score. W Lash converted. United 5 New Plymouth 0 . New Plymouth attacked from the kick off but United quickly retaliated and forced play well into the New Plymouth paddock. Receiving from a line out, L. Lash in-passed to send A. Lash over for W. Lash to convert. New Plymouth then took a turn on attack all the backs handling in a movement which finished close to the United goal line. United forwards rushed play back to the New Plymouth end. F. Adlam cut through to let McCready over. The kick failed. Cochrane, following up a cross kick from Adlam, snapped the ball up within inches of the line and galloped across in the corner. The kick failed. Ford was-' away shortly before half time. He beat Cochrane to be finally grassed by Adlam. New Plymouth forwards took charge and carried the ball oveXt-the line for Wakelin to score. Half time was called with the score; United ..' ...... 16 New Plymouth .. .... 5

United were sopn back on attack after the resumption and O'Keefe led a forward sally which carried play to the New Plymouth corner flag. . NewPlymouth were shortly afterwards compelled to kick behind the dead ball line to save. A United passing movement saw McCready over for another unconverted try. United 19 New Plymouth 5 W. Lash, using the short punt to good effect, penetrated the New Plymouth defence and, regaining possession, transferred to L. Lash, who went across- unopposed. The kick again failed. At this stage Priar retired and Elmes droppod back to full back. The last quarter saw the most) even play of the match. United backs were attacking from both sides of the field but the defence proved adequate until L. Lash, although collared, managed to throw himself far enough forward to score. He was again over shortly after* wards, after all the backs, including Cochrane, had handled. Shortly fore final time New Plymouth forwards charged to the United line and Richmond tumbled over to score. Time was called with the score: United .. 28/ New Plymouth 8 Referee; Mr K. Nodder.
