GASOMETER EXPLODES IN SHEET OF FLAME

Exploding in a she'et of'flame and a vast plume of smoke, a gasometer at Dewsbury (Yorkshire), 1,250,000 ft. in capacity, blew off its cover and killed two cousins, Samuel and James Gledhill, whose bodies were discovered among the debris. . - : tsf jjfH! Herbert Hinchcliffe and Joseph Rhodes were injured. Rhodes said he and Samuel Gledhill were outside the meter-house and James Gledhill inside. The explosion blew Rhodes some distance. Hinchcliffe, stooping to help him, caught the full blast of the fire and a shower of slates and stones, but saved his companion's life. Doctors, nurses, and the fire-brigade were quiekly on the spot. The firemen prevented the ignition of an adjacent gasometer containing 750,000 cubic feet. The explosion cut off the supply to a portion of Dewsbury and damaged the surrounding works.
